Introduction to Good Aid and Development [ES]
Now we know the individual and system level responses to poverty and have a greater understanding of what effects and define poverty, yet what about the groups and organizations or agencies that work in poverty reduction?
All development work, and some mission and aid work, is designed to help alleviate poverty or to see better outcomes for the people they are working with. However, different organizations are taking different emphasises and approaches. Taking different focuses and specialisations are good things but sometimes, we can act in a way that actually causes more harm to those who we are trying to help. This session is designed to help you to learn what type of questions to ask so that you can evaluate the different approaches to development that you will meet in different countries, like Cambodia, Indonesia, Australia, and help you to consider how you can personally make a difference.
- NGOs, Social enterprises, not-for-profit and charities aren’t they the same things?
- What does good development look like?
- What is the best practice?
- How do you know or tell whether the groups you support are being effective or not? What can you personally do?
- What are/is the role/s of the outsider in development? All these questions are going to be explored in our next courses.
